PDS Tech is hiring a Controls Technician to support a high-speed, highly automated distribution operation in Fort Mill, SC, where your troubleshooting skills will directly impact uptime and performance. This is a 3rd shift, temp-to-hire opportunity offering strong pay, shift differential, and the chance to step into a critical role where your expertise actually matters.


Controls Technician – 3rd Shift

Location: Fort Mill, SC
Shift: 3rd Shift (Shift Differential Included)
Pay Rate: $34.00 – $39.00/hour + shift differential
Assignment Type: Temp-to-Hire (W2)


Position Overview

The Controls Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and enhancing the accuracy, reliability, and control data integrity of PLC and PC-based automation systems supporting material handling and facility operations. This role ensures system performance and uptime while effectively utilizing Building Management Systems (BMS) and partnering with internal engineering teams and external vendors.


Key ResponsibilitiesControls & Automation Support
  • Troubleshoot and perform basic design modifications to PLC logic, HMIs, and automation systems

  • Maintain and improve control system reliability, performance, and data accuracy

  • Support Building Management Systems (BMS) and energy management systems

  • Interpret system performance data and drive improvements at macro and micro levels

Maintenance & System Reliability
  • Perform preventive maintenance on controls and electrical systems

  • Maintain and organize control and electrical parts inventory

  • Respond to and repair automation and material handling system failures

  • Assist with maintenance on conveyors, sortation systems, and facility equipment

Electrical & Equipment Support
  • Troubleshoot and maintain 3-phase electrical systems (up to 480V)

  • Work with MCCs, VFDs, motor controls, and power distribution systems

  • Install, test, and maintain electrical systems supporting automation and facilities

  • Support sensors, solenoids, proximity switches, robotics, and vision systems

Coordination & Documentation
  • Partner with engineering teams and external vendors on installations and upgrades

  • Coordinate electrical and controls-related projects as directed

  • Maintain accurate records including work orders, time sheets, and parts requests

  • Manage parts procedures and inventory control processes


Performance Expectations
  • Maintain high system uptime and operational reliability

  • Deliver accurate troubleshooting with minimal supervision

  • Ensure full compliance with safety and electrical standards

  • Support continuous improvement of automation systems and processes


Required Qualifications
  • Experience troubleshooting PLC systems (Allen-Bradley preferred: ControlLogix, CompactLogix, SLC500)

  • Strong understanding of 3-phase electrical systems (480V and below) and power distribution

  • Experience with conveyors, sortation systems, or material handling equipment

  • Ability to read electrical schematics and technical drawings

  • Familiarity with BMS / energy management systems

  • Strong troubleshooting skills in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision


Additional Technical Qualifications
  • Knowledge of HVAC principles supporting Building Management Systems (BMS)

  • Experience with electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems

  • Ability to assemble, modify, and maintain manufacturing equipment

  • Understanding of grounding systems and Arc Flash safety

  • Familiarity with MCCs and industrial electrical components

Preferred:

  • Experience with Siemens Step 7, WAGO, CAN, or B&R systems

  • Exposure to robotics and vision systems

  • Experience with Flex I/O (1794) and related automation hardware


Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Distribution center / warehouse environment

  • Continuous standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 50 lbs)

  • Work around live automation systems and electrical equipment

  • Physically active role on concrete flooring

  • Strong focus on safety and situational awareness required

Pay Details: $34.00 to $39.00 per hour
